LYLY - The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps is developing the installation of a chip and QR code on motorized vehicle license plates to make it easier for the police to monitor vehicle data through an installed ETLE camera.
"We are developing a number plate with a QR code and a chip to find out whether the vehicle's license plate is genuine or fake," said the Head of Korlantas Polri Inspector General Pol Firman Shantyabudi in Jakarta, last Tuesday.
According to Firman, the use of QR code and chip technology on vehicle license plates is to identify the number plates used by fake or genuine drivers.
He said public awareness of orderly traffic is still low.
Since electronic ticketing (ETLE) has been optimized, the public has been tricked into committing violations by avoiding having the license plate read by the ETLE camera by removing the license plate of the vehicle.
In addition, there are also people who use non-standard (fake) license plates purchased from street vendors.
For this reason, the Korlantas Polri is considering combining the application of electronic ticketing and manual ticketing.
"Why do we have to consider it, one of which is the community instead of the awareness that arises when a policeman does a ticket, but the number plate is removed from the back, replaced, and some even deliberately violate it," said Firman.
Related to this, he said, traffic police officers (polantas) do not mean to be silent, every violation that has the potential for a traffic accident is given a warning action.
Firman said that he had given directions to his staff that the traffic police on the road did not have to give a ticket, but also gave a warning, with the intention that the public would have an awareness of orderly traffic, obeying the rules.
According to him, if there is no awareness then law enforcement with the presence of the police will be raised again.
Korlantas Polri also complements ETLE in the field, one of which is by using QR code technology and chips on vehicle license plates.
"If people are not aware, we don't need to spend like this. The effectiveness of law enforcement can occur if the police, community and law enforcement can run well," said Firman.
Apart from that, Firman also appealed to the public not to buy fake number plates that are sold in the market.
The National Police will immediately improve the quality of motorized vehicle license plates, so that in the future there will be no neglect of the use of non-standard number plates.
Firman emphasized that law enforcement is the final step.
It encourages raising public awareness for orderly traffic.
He also reminded the public that the use of motorized vehicles without license plates is usually used by thieves.
To increase public awareness of orderly traffic, the National Police Traffic Corps has also reactivated road patrols."
"We have additional electric vehicles, revitalizing traffic patrols so that people are asked to be orderly, avoiding number plates on purpose. I say this is the perpetrator, because the back plate was almost removed by the robber.
"We will stop vehicles that don't have license plates on the back," said Firman.
Discourse on installing the QR code and chip on the vehicle's license plate was submitted in early January 2022. However, currently it is still in the development stage.
