LYLY - Samsung Electronics Co quietly celebrated the 53rd anniversary of the company's founding on Tuesday (1/11/2022), amid national mourning over the tragic deaths of 155 people in Itaewon, Seoul.
The ceremony was held at Samsung Digital City located in Suwon, 34 kilometers south of Seoul, in a reduced edition, with senior executives and employees in attendance, including Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and President Kyung Kye-hyun.
"We will create new business opportunities in artificial intelligence, internet of things, robotics and metaverse that change our future life in a bid to accelerate our growth momentum," Han said in his speech.
Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was promoted to the top position of the tech giant last week, did not participate in the event.
Samsung Electronics was first founded in January 1969, but its founding date is commemorated on November 1, when the company joined its semiconductor arm in 1988.
Prior to the ceremony, Samsung officials paid tribute to those killed in the tragedy. Samsung also canceled a gala program scheduled for Tuesday.
At least 155 people, mostly in their 20s, were killed and dozens injured when waves of people tried to pass through a narrow alley in the popular nightlife district of Itaewon during Halloween celebrations Saturday (29/10), Yonhap broadcast on Tuesday (1/11).
